Alkaline water is simply water with a pH higher than that of ordinary drinking water. The pH scale runs from 0 to 14 and measures how acidic or alkaline a substance is: 7 is neutral, below 7 is acidic and above 7 is alkaline. Alkaline water typically sits between pH 8 and 9.5. What separates ionised alkaline water from water that has simply had minerals stirred into it is how the pH is raised. A Singer device filters the water first, then passes it through an electrolysis cell. What the Evidence Actually Supports
Alkaline water is heavily marketed, and not every claim made about it holds up. Here is what can reasonably be said — and where the limits are.
Hydration and Everyday Drinking
The clearest benefit of any good drinking water is that people drink more of it when it tastes better. Filtered, chlorine-free water with a clean mineral profile is easier to drink in quantity, and adequate hydration is genuinely linked to energy levels, concentration and kidney function.
Antioxidant Potential (Negative ORP)
ORP measures a liquid tendency to donate or accept electrons. Tap and bottled water usually measure positive, roughly +200 to +400 mV. Electrolysed water measures negative, which reflects dissolved molecular hydrogen. Research into molecular hydrogen as an antioxidant is active and promising, but still early — this is fair to describe as a measurable property of the water, not as a proven treatment for any condition.
Acid Reflux
This is the one area with a specific published finding. A 2012 study in the Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology found that water at pH 8.8 irreversibly deactivated pepsin — the enzyme involved in reflux damage — under laboratory conditions. That is a laboratory result rather than a clinical cure, but it is real, peer-reviewed research you can look up.
Mineral Retention
Reverse osmosis strips calcium, magnesium and potassium out of water along with the contaminants. The Singer system removes chlorine, heavy metals, bacteria and viruses at 99.9% while retaining and re-introducing those minerals through the ALK+ stage. For anyone drinking two litres a day, that difference in mineral intake adds up.
An Honest Note on Body pH
You will find claims online that drinking alkaline water changes the pH of your blood or alkalises the body. It does not. Blood pH is held between 7.35 and 7.45 by the lungs and kidneys and stays there regardless of what you drink — which is fortunate, because a genuine shift would be a medical emergency. Alkaline water is a better everyday drinking water. It is not a treatment for disease, and anyone selling it as one is overselling it.
